Beyond university degrees, certifications, and formal education, some of the greatest growth in my life has come through self-education. Not just intellectually but emotionally and psychologically.
The ability to regulate emotion under pressure, build resilience, think critically, and develop what I call “psychological robustness” has largely come from the books, mentors, and ideas I pursued outside the classroom.
I believe this will increasingly become the way of the future. Information is now everywhere. The challenge is no longer access to knowledge, it’s the ability to interpret it, apply it, and use it to improve the quality of your life.
Here are six books that have significantly shaped my thinking:
• Man’s Search for Meaning — Viktor Frankl’s reflections from surviving Nazi concentration camps remind us that meaning, purpose, and attitude can sustain the human spirit even in unimaginable suffering.
• The Winning Mindset — A practical and grounded exploration of elite performance psychology, focusing on habits, standards, and the mindset required to perform under pressure.
• The Art of Focus — A modern reminder that attention is becoming one of the most valuable currencies in a distracted world.
• Belonging — Explores how connection, identity, and shared purpose strengthen teams, leadership, and human performance.
• The Chimp Paradox — A powerful framework for understanding emotional reactions and learning how to better manage the mind under stress.
• Antifragile — Challenges the idea of merely surviving adversity, arguing instead that some people and systems grow stronger because of chaos and difficulty.
Sometimes, one good book can change the trajectory of a life.
