MicroFilm Festival returns to Maleny!

The Rangebow MicroFilm Festival returns for its fourth year — a one-day celebration of bold storytelling, creative experimentation, and the filmmakers shaping the future of screen media on the Sunshine Coast.

Held at the Maleny Community Centre on Sunday October 18 from 10am-1pm, this lively festival brings together filmmakers, game developers, students, industry professionals and curious audiences for a day of screenings, talks, workshops and awards.

Across the program you’ll discover a curated selection of short films and micro games — from animation, documentary and narrative storytelling to experimental works and emerging interactive media. Many of the filmmakers are from Queensland, including students and emerging creators from the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

Throughout the day, industry guests and educators join panels and conversations exploring filmmaking, inclusive storytelling, and creative careers in screen media. Past speakers have included award-winning filmmakers and leading academics, with sessions designed to inspire both aspiring creators and anyone who loves great stories.

The festival culminates in the Rangebow MicroFilm Awards, celebrating outstanding works from the official selection and recognising emerging talent from across the region.

MicroFilm Producer. Eva-Marie Seeto shared her experiences running this event: “I've been the curator and Rangebow MicroFilm short film event producer since 2023. Being ‘shorts’ makes the entries more inclusive. People see amazing micro-budget school student work, right through to professional productions.

“The films are always very different - comedy, mystery, drama – and each year the audience and venue has grown. I hope that audiences once again see something unexpected and delightful, and that MicroFilm continues to connect and inspire local filmmakers!”

In 2025, HT Editor, Victoria McGuin, was the MC for the event and looks forward to reprising the MC role this year.

Victoria shared, “I was so impressed and entertained by the final films last year. Some were very tender and moving, others were hilarious or had a twist in the tale, but they were all unique. You really felt the love for film coming through every story.

“The production values were also high, as was the sound, lighting and direction. It’s exciting to know we have so much burgeoning talent, with the next wave of filmmakers pushing boundaries and connecting audiences.”

Whether you're a filmmaker, gamer, student, or simply someone who loves discovering new voices and fresh ideas, MicroFilm invites you to step inside the creative engine room of the Sunshine Coast screen community.
