CREATIVE CUTS - Outspoken presents

On November 19, 6 for 6.30pm at the Maleny Community Centre, Inga Simpson will be speaking about her passion project, A Tree-Lovers Guide to Australia.

Over the last two years she has travelled all over our continent researching the stories of remarkable trees. The result is an exquisite book, a sensational tour of beautiful, historic, rare, trees, lavishly illustrated with her own photographs.

Inga is the acclaimed author of seven works of fiction including Mr Wigg, Nest and Willowman, but she is also recognised as one of the foremost and strongest voices in Australian Nature writing. Her wonderful book Understory, a Life with Trees, was short-listed for the Adelaide Writers Week non-fiction prize. Inga is also an excellent landscape (and night-sky) photographer.

Inga was born in central west NSW. After living in Canberra, Brisbane, and the Sunshine Coast hinterland, she has settled on the far south coast of NSW. She began her career as a professional writer for government before gaining a PhD in creative writing and then, another one (Doctor Doctor in the German parlance) in English Literature, examining the history of nature writing on this continent.

Outspoken is very pleased to be able to present a full-day workshop with Inga on the day after the event, Writing Nature. It will focus on techniques for bringing landscape, flora and fauna to life, including discussion and exercises around evocative description, effective use of emotion, and the importance of story. Attendees will also consider writing from an ecological perspective, and the challenges of writing with an environmental message.

Outspoken tickets are $30 and $20 for students. Visit: outspokenmaleny.com to book for the talk and workshop.
