Following the acclaimed productions of The Revolutionists, A Stretch of the Imagination, Georgia and Krishnan’s Dairy, 3bCreative turns its attention to one of the world’s most celebrated and adventurous playwrights, Caryl Churchill.

Escaped Alone and What If If Only are two radically different plays — but together they make a thrilling evening of theatre.

In Escaped Alone, four women sit in a garden, drinking tea and talking about ordinary things. Then Mrs Jarrett begins telling them what is happening beyond the garden wall.

Climate catastrophe, social collapse, technology, violence and human folly emerge in Churchill’s darkly comic, astonishingly compressed visions. And somehow, there is still tea and cake.

What If If Only turns inward, exploring grief, possibility and the lives that might have existed if just one thing had been different. Churchill creates multiple possible futures with extraordinary economy and emotional force.

And then there are the performers. An exceptional ensemble of local actors brings Churchill’s precise, playful and often devastating language to life — demanding performances that can shift from comedy to catastrophe in an instant.
