COMMUNITY NEWS - Maleny food unwaste

Each year, Australian households waste about 2.5 million tonnes of food. This is a huge issue in terms of cost and environmental damage. At least 92% of food wasted ends up in landfill, where it creates methane, a large contributor to greenhouse gases. Wasted food also costs individual households from $2,000-$3,000 per year.
To raise awareness of this problem and the role each of us can play in reducing food waste, Waste Action Maleny (WAM), in conjunction with Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and Sunshine Coast Council, are inviting members of the community to attend the following free community events on October 15.
10.30 – 11.30am Join WAM in the Verandah room, Maleny Community Centre to learn how to reduce food waste. Lucky door prizes - compost bin, worm farm, Boomerang Bags.
12.00 -1pm Maleny Neighbourhood Centre Community Lunch - prepared from food donated by local businesses that otherwise may have been wasted.
By working together, we can find solutions to food waste, and help meet the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal Target of halving food waste by 2030.
