CREATIVE CUTS - Through Her Eyes

Step into the world of Jinny Smith in Cate Patterson’s captivating new novel, Through Her Eyes, a heartfelt tribute to the pioneering women of Montville. 

Set between 1893 and the outbreak of World War I, the novel follows the journey of the Smith family as they settle in the hinterland district where only six families are scattered across miles of untamed land. Arriving at Razorback as a naïve young mother, Jinny soon shares her husband Harry’s dream of building a vibrant farming community.

Jinny’s story is one of resilience and transformation. As Montville’s first postmistress and storekeeper, she juggles the demands of raising 12 children with the responsibilities of helping shape the heart of a fledgling settlement. Harry, meanwhile, forges his own path as a nurseryman and orchardist. 

The novel unfolds through Jinny’s eyes, drawing on real events and local history chronicled in The Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser, and is enriched by the personal memories of Jinny’s granddaughters. Vivid moments such as the relief of hearing the jingling bells on the neck strap of Dr Penny’s horse in the dead of night bring authenticity and warmth to the narrative.

An ancient red cedar tree, Grandmother Wootha, stands as Jinny’s sanctuary in times of sorrow, offering solace and hope. Guided by the wisdom of the Smith matriarchs, Jinny grows into a pillar for future generations. 

Through Her Eyes is both an engaging read and a moving tribute to the women who shaped Montville.
